The refractometer can be used to determine the quality (antibody content) of the foal’s milk from a single drop of milk immediately after the foaling. This is extremely important for assessing the foal’s immune system.
Foals are born without an immune system. The quantity and quality of the foal’s milk intake in the first 6-8 hours of life determines its resistance and viability during the critical first months. Determining the quality of the colostrum is therefore extremely important. If the milk is of good quality, 2 dl can be frozen for later use. In the case of poor quality milk, the previously frozen milk can be used to save the foal.
