If you are just getting acquainted with the possibilities, we have compared the most common methods for you so that you can easily see which one suits your stud farm best.

Did you know? Without supervision, up to 10-15% of foals can die during foaling.

In 3-5% of cases, the mare's life is also at risk (uterine injury, uterine torsion, internal bleeding).

90% of foaling occurs at night, and there are no reliable signs that can predict when foaling will begin on a given night.

The most common causes of foal death

  • Prolonged or obstructed foaling (dystocia)
  • Red bag delivery (oxygen deprivation, suffocation)
  • The foal is unable to stand up or suckle in the first hour (fatal infections can develop in the absence of colostrum)

More than 50% of foal deaths can be prevented if help arrives in time. This is why a reliable foal birth alarm system is necessary.

However, many devices on the market give false alarms or fail to signal in time, which can also result in the loss of the foal.

The Sigloo horse foaling alarm device was developed to
eliminate these risks.

Based on veterinary experience, this technology ensures that you are always there on time, with nearly 100% reliability, no false alarms and real-time notifications.

Frequently asked questions and answers from Sigloo

If you provide a list of numbers to call in case of an alarm when placing your order and request the SIM card we provide, you will receive the device fully operational.
All you need to do is attach two antennas, connect to the network, and turn it on. Including unpacking, it takes about five minutes!

If the transmitter and the system have been tested in accordance with the instructions for use before installation and are checked regularly, false alarms are virtually impossible. Problems that can occur with other calving detection systems (the mare leaves the range of the receiver in the pasture, does not lie down when calving, etc.) do not affect the operation of Sigloo.

If the transmitter has been attached correctly, false alarms will not occur. Factors that may activate other calving detection systems (e.g., the mare lying down while resting or sweating in a warm barn) do not affect the operation of Sigloo.

The transmitter is usually attached 7-8 days before the calculated calving date.
Starting 2-3 weeks before the date, we check the milk quality every day (by squeezing 1-2 drops onto a plastic sheet).
As long as the milk is watery and transparent and the quantity is small, we wait with attaching the transmitter.
If the quality, color, or quantity of milk changes significantly from one day to the next, we attach the calving indicator.
The use of a handheld refractometer makes milk testing more accurate, as it can determine the quality of milk from a single drop.
It is also extremely important to use it after calving to determine the composition of colostrum.

The transmitter is sewn in by an experienced equine veterinarian. If you are sewing in a transmitter for the first time, it is very important to watch the following video on YouTube beforehand.
It is essential that the sutures are as deep as possible, i.e., that they take up a lot of tissue.
When tying the knot, do not pull too hard so that the thread does not cut into the tissue.
Most importantly, before sewing, always test the transmitter, its charge, and the entire system with a test alarm.

If the suture is performed using the needle and thread combination provided by us, it is no more painful than two injections.
The needle used in our suture kit is a thin injection needle, which causes minimal discomfort when inserted.
The thickness and quality of the thread is important for long-term wear. Our kit contains Supramid thread with a thickness of metric 6.
This thread does not absorb or conduct secretions, urine, etc. into the wound, and due to its thickness, it does not cut into the tissue of the penis.
We do not recommend using thread of a different quality or thickness.

After suturing, it is advisable to check the transmitter twice a week until calving.
Dried manure should be carefully removed from the surface, especially around the magnet.
Experienced users coat the transmitter with Vaseline or other grease after suturing (and again after 1-2 weeks), which significantly reduces contamination of the transmitter.

During birth, the transmitter does not interfere with the foal at all, and birth proceeds without disruption.
When the mare arrives, the transmitter and magnet can be easily removed by cutting the threads. It is advisable to keep a small pair of scissors nearby for this purpose.

After calving, clean the transmitter with running water (using a small brush if necessary)
and remove any dirt from the yarn channels using a small needle.
Recharge the transmitter battery after each calving.

Place the transmitter in the charger according to the instructions for use and leave it there for at least 4 hours (it can also be left overnight).
After testing and before the next fitting, always perform a test alarm, at which point the device will display the battery charge level.

The transmitter can be used for an unlimited period of time and for an unlimited number of alarms (our oldest transmitters are 17 years old).

The plastic cover of the transmitter magnet and the fastening thread wear out after a few births, at which point they need to be replaced.
Spare magnets can be ordered at any time from our webshop at a nominal price.
Similarly, our sewing kit can also be reordered at any time.

In case of weak mobile signal, the antenna can be placed outside, e.g. on the edge of the roof, using a 5 m extension cable connected between the receiver and the antenna. In most cases, outdoor and high placement improves mobile reception. The signal strength can be read accurately on the device. If a supervisor is available near the barn (within 2-300 m), it is possible to order an optional horn, which can be connected to the device with a cable. Its operation is completely independent of mobile signal strength, so it can be a solution even in places with zero signal strength.
A handheld receiver will also be available soon. This is a mobile phone-sized device that sounds an alarm when an alert is triggered, meaning it does not use mobile network coverage.

The use of one signal repeater is recommended in all cases, which is why it is included in the basic set.
If a longer range or larger coverage area is required, up to six additional signal repeaters can be used.
This allows the range and coverage area of the device to be increased almost indefinitely.

This may occur if the device's range does not cover the entire pasture. The device checks the availability of each attached transmitter every 20 minutes,
which increases the security of the system in a way that is unique on the market. If any transmitter is unavailable, the device notifies the user via text message and phone call.

After ordering and payment, we will ship the device on the same day via UPS express service. Delivery time is 1-2 days within Europe and 3-6 days outside Europe.

We provide a 3-year full warranty for the device. This can be extended for up to 7 years for a nominal fee. If a malfunction occurs during the season in an urgent situation, we will immediately send a replacement device (even after the warranty period has expired).
We also offer a 30-day full money-back guarantee after purchase.
If you are not satisfied with the device for any reason, we will refund the full purchase price without explanation after you return it.

Over the past 16 years, we have sold more than 1,000 devices and rented them out hundreds of times.
Experience shows that renting is more advantageous for owners than buying if they expect one or at most two births per year.
In the case of two or three calvings per year, purchasing is definitely more financially advantageous than renting in the long term.

There are significant differences between calving detection systems in terms of both reliability and usability.
Personal monitoring ensures direct presence, but it is extremely tiring, especially if it lasts through the night, and it is easy for the mare to give birth between observations. If performed by an employee, the method is expensive and unreliable.
Camera monitoring is somewhat more convenient, but has similar problems: the moment of foaling can easily go unnoticed, and the system only works really effectively in confined spaces, such as stalls.
Motion or body position sensors are more advanced because they reduce the number of unnecessary nighttime wake-ups. However, due to their sensitivity, false alarms are common, and in group housing, animals can disturb each other. These devices offer an average reliability of 90%, meaning that they may fail to detect one in ten births.
The greatest security is offered by systems that work with transmitters that can be sewn onto the bedding, which operate independently of the animal's body position or habits and provide nearly 100% alarm accuracy. The disadvantage of most types is that the transmitter cannot be recharged, the range is limited, and they can only be operated from the mains.
These shortcomings are eliminated by the Sigloo system, which is an improved, modern version of the technology that can be sewn onto the halter. Its transmitter is rechargeable, so it can be used for multiple calvings, it automatically signals when it is out of range, and thanks to its own battery unit, it works reliably even away from the barn, in the pasture. False alarms are virtually non-existent, making Sigloo the safest, most economical, and most convenient calving alarm solution on the market today.

The history of Sigloo

An idea from a veterinarian and an engineer

That's when we had an idea: why not make a heat detector that we ourselves would be happy to use every day?
After several years of development, Sigloo was born. It became the first heat detector designed by a practicing equine veterinarian, tailored to the everyday needs of horse breeders.
We manufactured and tested the first series ourselves, assembled them by hand, delivered them personally to farmers, and incorporated all feedback into the next version.
This is how Sigloo became one of the most reliable companions for horse breeders during the foaling season.

megbízható, bővíthető és automatikus ló ellésfigyelő rendszer, reliable, expandable and automatic horse foaling monitoring system, zuverlässiges, erweiterbares und automatisches pferde-abfohlüberwachungssystem, système de surveillance du poulinage des chevaux fiable, extensible et automatique

This is how one of the world's most reliable horse foaling alarms was born.

Like most good ideas, this one also originated from an everyday problem.
The founder of our company, György Pénzes, has been a veterinarian for more than 30 years and has assisted in the birth of nearly a hundred foals each year at one of Europe's largest sport horse stud farms. He tried out all the available foaling alarms, but each one had some kind of compromise:
• one constantly gave false alarms,
• another failed to signal when it should have,
• and some were prohibitively expensive in the long run.
